Welcome to my Astro-Man archive

This site is meant to be a visual archive of every variation of every Man... or Astro-Man? 7" single ever released. Most of what you'll see here comes from my personal collection. As information pours in I will post it, so please comment if you think you have something to add. I have no intention of posting MP3s here. I'm sure you can find the music elsewhere. This is just an attempt to collect information about the band's prolific creation of singles into one spot. If you can get past the fact that I rarely clean my scanner, I think you'll enjoy what you find here.

Use the Table of Contents on the sidebar if you are looking for details on a specific 7".

inside the head of John Peel

inside the head of John Peel was a Man or Astro-Man? double 7" EP that was released in 1997. It was put out by Astro-Fonic Records (af-001). It was recorded as a Peel Session, a segment that ran on John Peel’s BBC Radio 1 show, on March 19, 1995. The back of the record states March 20, 1995 as the date of the broadcast. It was recorded in the Maida Vale 4 studio in London. The band was well loved by John Peel and received some of their earliest British airplay on his radio program. From December of 1993 through November of 2000, Man or Astro-Man? would do six of these Peel sessions.

The gate-fold picture sleeve was made of heavy cardboard. There was picture of Coco performing live on the inside of the sleeve. Here is a scan of the inside:

The two records were on translucent black vinyl. There was also an insert: two jukebox label tags. Here is a scan of the records and the insert:

This is officially considered a bootleg release, even though it was legitimately recorded for broadcast. I purchased mine at the merch table at a MOAM? concert, so I wonder if the band itself had something to do with the release. And though it did not see the light of day until 1997, it was recorded during the time that Captain Zeno was the rhythm guitarist. For more information on the songs performed during this Peel Session, and for the exact dates of the other times they played for Peel, go to the BBC Radio 1 website.
